This woodcut print is associated with Hirst’s iconic “Pharmaceutical” series, comprised of grids of brightly colored dots that explore the interaction between pure colors. The titles refer to chemical compounds used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries, all of which Hirst draws from the company Sigma-Aldrich’s catalogue “Biochemicals for Research and Diagnostic Reagents.” Using several different mediums and formats throughout the series, Hirst considers the creative variations possible within a rigid, predetermined compositional system, applying the exacting logic of science to art making.
